Fat cells

All these years, my perspective about fall cells have been all wrong...... Not totally, but sufficiently. Basically, based on my old knowledge, an average person will have approximately 30-75 billion fat cells dependent on how obese he/she is and not forgetting gene factor. The storage of fat in our body is promoted by an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). The activity of this enzyme is directly proportionate to the number of fat cells, thus a person with more fat cells stores fat more readily. For fat storage to happen, the energy intake must be greater than the energy expended, in terms of calories. Once there is an excess, the fat cells increase in volume, thus increasing the bodyfat percentage, and if lowered, it simply means the volume decreases.

What i am wrong over these years is that the number of fat cells does increases, at cellular level, a process called fat cell hyperplasia. Hypertrophy refers to the enlargement of the fat cells. Hyperplasia happens when obesity sets into play. The cruel news to these people is that the number of fat cells increases, it does not decrease. Losing of weight will not lead to losing of fat cells but only contribute to the shrinking. That is the main reason why obesity cannot be cured, but only controlled. This explains why it is easier to gain weight if you have been obese once.

There is alot of information below, for those interested to bulk up, healthily.

For general knowledge only lar, anything to do with fitness right now is interesting =P

Hmm leong, fats contain fat cells, not the other way round. When fat cells expand in size, it will constitute to the body fat percentage.
